At Hannover Fair: The Latest in Proximity Sensors 23/06/2009
It was over 50 years ago that two radio engineers, Walter Pepperl and Wilfried Gehl, were commissioned by BASF to find an alternative to mechanical contact switches. The challenge was to develop a robust component that would operate reliably after many thousands of cycles at very low currents, in the corrosive atmosphere of a chemical plant. What they came up with was the first inductive proximity switch, and their company Pepperl+Fuchs has gone on to become a leader in the technology. Full Story...

The Model Builders at Hannover Fair 05/06/2009
Most engineers, when they are young (and some even when they’re a little older), build model cars or airplanes. So when they think of models, they think of the small-scale replicas of BMWs and Airbuses they’ve seen over the years. For Hannover Fair, they make models, too, but they do just the opposite. They make huge models of industrial control devices—fifty times bigger than what they really are. And they make them with surprising precision. Full Story...

Machine building: Flexibility is silver bullet for packaging machine design 12/05/2009
Predictive maintenance, online parts ordering, energy monitoring are information metrics moving to the operator level or machine level. Full Story...

Siemens launches a ‘productivity engine’ 10/05/2009
Introduced at Hannover Fair, the Simatic S7-1200 Micro-Controller is Siemens' new generation of micro PLCs. Compact design, the controller is designed to be used with a new generation of HMIs, and programmed together with the Simatic Step 7 Basic engineering system. Full Story...

A Perplexing New Trend: PC-based Safety Control 05/05/2009
PC-based safety? Can it really be true? A machine safety system built on a PC? Would you trust your arms and fingers on the operation of a Windows PC? Surely this is going to make some people nervous. Full Story...

Hannover Messe’s Synchronised Servos 04/05/2009
A popular way to show precise motion control at Hannover Messe is to display spinning wheels that are carefully aligned in real time to form recognisable patterns. Lately we’ve seen this technique to show off high speed motion control buses. Full Story...

At Hannover Messe: Siemens’ New IO Link Products 04/05/2009
Siemens's Industry Automation Division continues to add to its portfolio of IO Link products, of which two new ones were shown at the fair. One was a family of ultrasonic proximity switches that can sense up to 10 metres, and a Sirius motor starter—previously released with an AS-i interface—now equipped with IO Link communications. Full Story...

Embedded control: Automation’s fastest growing segment 15/04/2009
This growing technology is bridging the gap between conventional modular programmable controllers on the one hand and PC-based control systems on the other. The boundaries are increasingly fluid, and the power density continues to increase. Full Story...

Sleek and elegant: New touchscreens for embedded control 15/04/2009
With the decentralisation of automation tasks, traditional control cabinets are becoming increasingly smaller—and may disappear entirely. If there is little or no cabinet, where will you put the Human Machine Interface (HMI) device? Full Story...

The Practice of Safe Sensing 15/04/2009
Safety-certified sensors promise to cut costs and boost performance. But the tradeoffs must be carefully considered. Full Story...

Siemens Introduces a Foundation Fieldbus Module 23/12/2008
The Siemens Industry Automation Division has developed a new Fieldbus Foundation communication module for connecting its flow instruments to the FF H1 fieldbus. This fieldbus operates at 31.25 kbits/sec on twisted pair instrument cabling with power and signal on the same wire. Full Story...

Doing more than flow 30/11/2008
To compensate for fluctuations in pressure, temperature, viscosity, and density, flowmeters are taking extra sensors on board. Full Story...
