Liquid lens camera technology

30 June 2015

Last year, PixeLINK, a global provider of industrial cameras for the machine vision and microscopy markets and provider of electrowetting liquid lens solutions, announced production of the world's first industrial cameras to include an electronic, focus-controllable liquid lens. Since production, this industrial camera has found applications in medical, inspection and security markets.

Enabling auto focus with no moving parts, the cameras offer low power consumption, high shock resistance, and fast autofocus change in milliseconds. Along with this, utilising Varioptic electrowetting technology, the cameras provide fast, noiseless and controllable auto focus ranging from 10cm to infinity. The Varioptic lens also has a 16mm effective focal length which offers application-controlled and user programmable-controlled auto focus capabilities in board-level and enclosed PixeLINK cameras.

While the typical lifespan of a mechanical lens system is a few hundred thousand cycles, liquid lenses have been tested over 100 million cycles without performance degradation. Liquid lenses can also reconfigure themselves in tens of milliseconds, making them suitable for high vibration environments and applications that require fast focus changes.

Scoprion Vision is the new UK distributor for the range. Other european distributors can be found via the pixeLINK web site: http://pixelink.com/sales/distributor/#europe-distributors
