Reliable connection of sensors and actuators via PROFIBUS

15 April 2014

Belden has added new robust Lumberg input/outputn-ruggedised (LioN-R) modules to its product line.

The rugged modules allow actuators and sensors to be connected to controllers via PROFIBUS-DP, allowing the productivity of machines and systems to be increased. Their fully potted metal housings guarantee high mechanical stability and can withstand welding sparks, filings, aggressive coolants and lubricants. Functional reliability is assured through galvanic isolation between sensors and actuators and the higher-level bus system, as well as through short-circuit proof outputs. Based on a simple diagnostic concept, faults can also be located quickly due to precise channel and bus diagnosis. Compared to parallel wiring, standardized M12 connection technology reduces the time and effort required for installation, maintenance and storage, while insuring quick and simple expansion.

The LioN-R modules are designed primarily for use in mechanical engineering. Typical applications could include metal processing, material handling, welding and food and beverage machinery. The metal housings fulfill the requirements of modern machine design. "Thanks to the new ruggedised modules in the LioN-R family, PROFIBUS installations can now benefit from this robust I/O technology, which has already set standards with Profinet and Ethernet/IP for reliable and secure data communication in harsh environments," said product manager Toni Hauert.

The LioN-R I/O modules for PROFIBUS come in three versions with 16 digital input (DI) channels, 16 digital output (DO) channels or a combination of 8 DI and 8 DO channels. In combination with the 8 I/O slots, the two bus interfaces feature vibration-proof M12 connection technology with metal threads and embedded ports for space-saving installations.

The optimised slot arrangement makes the modules easy to use. In addition, the module address can be set conveniently using a rotary switch. The power supply with a 7/8in connector has a nominal voltage of 24 V DC. All variants of the LioN-R modules satisfy the requirements of industrial protection class IP67, are designed for an operating temperature range of -10°C to +60°C, and are certified by the PROFIBUS User Organization (PNO) as well as UL.
