ABB launches a network of integrators for programmable logic controllers (PLC) to give original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) easy access to PLC programming expertise
Initially, four PLC integrators have signed a partnership agreement with ABB, giving them exclusive rights over a sales territory. These are Bryant Electrical Ltd of Rochester, Kent who can support all legacy ABB PLCs as well as current models; Elite Control Systems, Livingston; Control House of Elland, West Yorkshire and Tycon of Wrexham, North Wales. Gary Busby, ABB sales manager for small drives and PLCs, says: "We chose our PLC integrators for their extensive experience of programming PLCs and integrating them as part of a wider control solution. They can program the PLCs to form part of a solution based on ABB’s wide range of drives, HMIs and other control and automation products. Alternatively they can be programmed to a specification to match other vendors’ products."Whatever the option chosen, by using ABB PLC integrators, OEMs can be assured that they are getting a properly engineered system that will do exactly what they need."Recent contracts won by the network include a major project for Spirax Sarco to supply a PLC and HMI solution for heat exchanger control.All partners carry a large local stock of ABB PLCs at their own facilities, supported by a central stock in Germany, where the PLCs are made. The ABB AC500 is one of the latest available products from ABB, with a modular construction that allows PLC operators the option to increase performance by simply interchanging modules. Upgrading the CPU modules lets operators increase the processing performance while other PLC parts remain untouched.Other new products in the pipeline include a new range of HMIs and a new SIL 3 rated PLC.Says Busby: "ABB has ambitious plans to grow its PLC business beyond anything we have done in the past and we will be looking to expand the PLC partner network to support this.
