Energy control pack helps visualise energy savings

19 September 2011

Mitsubishi Electric has introduced the Energy Control Pack (ECP) built on its e-F@ctory concept.

The ECP provides visualisation and control to help optimise energy usage, limit power consumption over time and manage power peaks, streamlining processes to deliver significant energy savings.

Developed with e-F@ctory Alliance Partners INEA and LEM, ECP integrates energy management with other enterprise systems. It collects live data from all points of energy consumption for analysis by multiple levels of management systems. On the plant floor this provides the means, for example, for motor or line speeds to be automatically trimmed, loads to be more closely matched and temperatures to be controlled in real-time to help deliver energy savings.

The ECP is based on a series of proven control modules which can be selected, configured and scaled to suit any application. It bundles together hardware, software and documentation for ‘out-of-the-box’ energy management. The pack is built around Mitsubishi Electric FX3U or Q series PLCs programmed with a dedicated Energy Control algorithm. Various loads can be connected and measured by energy meters that interface to the PLC with pre-made function blocks delivering seamless communications. A user-friendly Mitsubishi GOT series HMI is connected to the PLC and used for setting up the application and subsequently to monitor the system. Optionally, a SCADA web application, on a separate server, can provide enhanced usability.

At its simplest level, the ECP Compact configuration provides a single PLC capable of controlling up to 16 electrical loads. Integral software automatically collects and analyses all necessary data. The ECP Modular configuration is for complex systems with more than 16 loads which are dispersed to several locations; several PLCs are installed, with one defined as the master and the rest as slaves. Finally, there is the ECP Open for the most complex systems that require a project-based approach, integrating with wider energy systems such as air, gas, oil, water, space heating or air conditioning.

The Energy Control Pack provides easy connection to IT databases and other information systems, and is completely scalable to suit applications of different sizes and functionalities. It provides a parameter-based set-up that eliminates the need for complex programming. Parameters such as load type, tariff schedule and others are simply set via the HMI. Once operating, the terminal displays current data as it is collected.
