Belden has extended its Hirschmann™ product range with a 9-port version of the OCTOPUS OS20 series. The Hirschmann™ basic software is installed on this layer-2 switch, which meets the requirements of protection class IP67. This software supports both various management and security functions and fast redundancy methods such as HIPER-Ring, MRP and RSTP. The new Fast Ethernet ports (10/100 BASE-TX) have vibration-resistant M12 connections in D-coding. Further features include a robust metal housing and an extended temperature range from -40° to +70° C. The OCTOPUS also meets EMC and fire protection requirements for use in rail vehicles. An E-1 approval with the German Federal Motor Transport Authority has also been applied for. As the switch can be cascaded in any way, decentrally structured automation networks with short transmission paths can be implemented with the respective terminal devices. The OCTOPUS’s redundancy method and a redundant voltage supply guarantee high network availability.
The switch, whose compact housing (184 x 189 x 70 mm) is designed for wall mounting, can be quickly put into operation with plug&play. Configuration is possible either via Command Line Interface (CLI), DHCP relay agent option 82, HiDiscovery or the ACA11-M12 EEC auto-configuration adapter.
RMON, port mirroring and LLDP (Topology Discovery 802.1ab) are provided for diagnostics. A floating signal contact signals independently of the data network alarms, which can be defined individually. The switch also has LEDs on the front that display both the device and network status, and the data transfer and power supply. This makes start-up, service and maintenance easier.
Detailed information can be retrieved via a serial V.24 interface or the Ethernet ports. The switch is monitored and configured via SNMP, a standard web browser or the Industrial HiVision high performance network management software from Hirschmann™.
With the new OCTOPUS OS20 series 9-port switch Belden has added another variant to the Hirschmann™ IP67 switch family, which now includes more than twenty different devices. "This switch offers an attractive price-performance ratio," says Product Manager Rolf-Dieter Sommer, adding: "With its basic software, which is optimized for applications at field level, it stands out clearly from the unmanaged switches of this product family, and price-wise stays well below the fully managed devices."
