Large actuator control helps to safely regulate oil flow

26 July 2011

Surgutneftegas has announced that it is to use Actuator Control Systems (ACS) from ASCO Numatics to control large actuators at its Kirishi refinery near St Petersburg in Russia.

The company was selected to offer a solution because of its ability to engineer and supply an actuator control system that could be configured to meet the specific needs of Surgutneftegas.

A total of 88, ½in NPT Actuator Control Systems will control valves used to regulate the flow of oil across the refinery. Being supplied as pre-assembled units reduces installation time and provides savings in the total installed cost.

The ACS being supplied to Kirishi consists of a 3-way solenoid (pilot) valve, a filter regulator and a pressure relief valve. The filter regulator cleans the air before it enters the pilot valve extending the operating life of the valve from 5 million up to 10 million cycles. The pressure relief valve protects the pilot valve in an emergency situation. The ACS is SIL 3 and IECEx/ATEX approved and certified to the Russian GOST Standard.

To engineer a system that will precisely meet a customers actuator control needs, ASCO Numatics will combine a range of components that include explosion proof solenoid valves, spool valves, manual reset valves and filter regulators. Manufactured in 316L stainless steel to resist aggressive environments, the system features an optimised flow path and is lighter, stronger and more compact than conventional panel mounting assemblies.

The components are connected by means of a versatile, leak tight coupling system and mounted on a vibration resistant and shock proof stainless steel base plate. The modular system eliminates complex arrangements using panels, pipes and additional fittings and is pre-assembled ready for use.
