Machinery health management solution for Romanian power plant

S.C. Complexul Energetic Rovinari has selected Emerson Process Management to supply its CSI 6500 Machinery Health Monitor for continuous protection and prediction monitoring of critical machinery at the Rovinari Power Plant in Romania.

The 1320MW plant is believed to be the second-largest power generating facility in the country.

The CSI 6500 complies with the requirements for API 670 (American Petroleum Institute) protection, the globally-accepted definition of industry best practices for turbomachinery protection. Sensors connected to the CSI 6500 will gather vibration data from the steam turbine and feed water pump for deeper analysis with Emerson’s AMS Suite predictive maintenance software, enabling maintenance personnel to predict equipment issues to better maintain and protect the machinery.

The CSI 6500 will also be integrated with Emerson’s Ovation expert control system, which will provide monitoring and control of the boiler, balance-of-plant processes, and management of the plant’s power output. In addition to the CSI 6500, AMS Suite communicates online with HART field devices for configuration and calibration as well as ongoing diagnosis and troubleshooting.

“The CSI 6500 will integrate seamlessly with the Ovation control system to provide our maintenance and operations teams with real-time machinery health feedback,” said Bratuianu Preda, I&C chief engineer for the Rovinari plant. “By detecting changes in machinery health, we can effectively plan our maintenance programme – reducing downtime and increasing our operating efficiency.”

The CSI 6500 easily connects to the Ovation expert control system in a three-step process aid to take less than ten minutes. This integration directly supports power generators’ drive for improved availability and performance by delivering machinery health feedback to operators.
