Over 10 million compact PLCs for Mitsubishi

24 January 2011

Mitsubishi Electric has announced that its installed base of compact PLCs – the FX – has topped ten million units. This, claims the company, makes the FX range one of the most widely used PLCs in the world.

The company launched its first compact PLC onto the European market over 30 years ago. At that time compact PLCs brought PLC control and functionality into smaller, lower cost applications that would previously have had to rely on discrete relay-based logic.

The FX3U series is the third generation of this family of compact PLCs. In addition to digital and analogue I/O, the FX3U provides modules for drive, servo and high speed positioning applications.

With a cycle time of 65ns, it is over four times faster than the previous generation of PLCs, promising faster scan times and faster response. However, despite now being in the third-generation of technology, the controllers are backwardly compatible to their predecessors.
