Moxa’s TN-5508 industrial Ethernet switches deliver solutions for ground transportation to customers around the world, including, in this application, a French public enterprise that operates and maintains a rail network covering around 32,000 km and runs 14,000 trains daily. The rail service provider’s goal was to retrofit two regional train lines with IP networks. With IP networks, the upgraded trains will now be able to process large amounts of data, such as voice or video streams, and can also include wireless network access. In addition, the network refurbishment will also be used to offer comprehensive passenger infotainment services. Moxa will deliver the Ethernet switches for this project throughout the next three years. The switches will be installed in the locomotive and every passenger car. Together, they will form a Moxa Turbo Ring, which boasts a fault recovery speed of less than 20 ms at a full load of 250 switches to minimise downtime caused by network failures. In addition, the Ethernet switches will provide a high bandwidth network at 100 Mbps, allowing the integration of multiple data applications in the same backbone. “We designed the Moxa TN-5508 with the ruggedness to excel in railway applications, such as passenger infotainment systems and IP video surveillance. A powerful network of TN switches can also accommodate passenger comfort and redundant safety systems,” said Leo Tsao, senior director of Moxa Power and Transportation division.
