Brunner Mond goes for PIMS from ITS

18 August 2010

When the Brunner Mond decided to implement a Plant Information Management System (PIMS) at its Mond Northwich site in the UK, it turned to Industrial Technology Systems (ITS). Brunner Mond specialises in the manufacture of Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate), Sodium Bicarbonate, Calcium Chloride and associated alkaline chemicals.

These chemicals are the key raw materials used to manufacture a range of industrial, household and personal care items such as glass, detergents, biscuits, and life-saving dialysis treatments.
Brunner Mond is a supplier of Sodium Bicarbonate EP/USP to the pharmaceutical industry where it is used in a wide range of pharmaceutical products. The company wanted a reliable, robust Management Information System solution to link to an Emerson DeltaV system and replace the current PRISM system.

ITS, an AspenTech partner, recommended a proven PRISM / Questar replacement system consisting of its Fusion Pims product, layered onto an AspenTech InfoPlus.21 system. Fusion Pims is a zero footprint, web-based reporting and data entry tool with an optional calculation engine for producing process accounting data. The product, based on an AspenTech InfoPlus.21 database was designed in 2000 for companies with locked down desktops and is suitable for regulated industries.

Fusion provides a single repository for all operational data. Its flexible and simple interface enables users to configure screens easily and efficiently, and to identify faults quickly. When integrated with an InfoPlus.21 database, Fusion enables users to manage weekly, monthly and yearly (periodic) operating reports, process loss accounting, batch information etc.

As well as providing the PRISM replacement, Fusion and InfoPlus.21 will offer the expandability to incorporate other legacy reporting and accountancy systems that may exist on site. Fusion is designed to allow the customer to make their own, controlled edits. Easier editing provides the opportunity for features to be added to the system in future.

Many types of data can be automatically retrieved from plant equipment, DCS systems, PLCs, or other databases, reducing the need for manual collection of data. The solution will provide a reporting front end and will gather real time data for 'right first time' decisions to be made. The information gathered by the Fusion/ InfoPlus.21 solution will provide Brunner Mond with process improvements.

ITS has a strong background in regulated industries, including pharmaceutical, providing a wide range of skills through the whole project lifecycle. Activities range from providing assistance during the development of initial requirements and turning them into a User Requirement Specification; through implementation and onto commissioning and validation, using terminology that is understood in the industry.
