New controllers with more compact design, more performance and Profinet communication

09 December 2009

The Siemens Industry Automation Division has developed four new Simatic S7-300 controllers with a width of just 40 millimeters. There are two standard controllers, and two failsafe controllers, included in the announcement.

Although their width has been reduced, the new controllers with two Profinet interfaces offer considerably more performance and working memory than their predecessors.

The two Profinet interfaces enable line networking structures to be implemented easily and cost-effectively.

The new controllers are faster: they execute user programs more than twice as fast. For example, bit commands now only require 25 nanoseconds. The time to execute word, fixed-point, and floating-point arithmetic commands is much shorter than before.

The expanded functions of the integrated web server enable system diagnostics, for example with automatic page update and a diagnostics buffer for up to 499 entries.

What is more, the graphical representation of the Profinet IO topology has been revised. This offers a detailed tabular display of the module status of the connected Profinet stations and a direct link to their web servers

The designations for the two standard controllers are CPU 315-2 PN/DP and CPU 317-2 PN/DP and the designations for the two failsafe controllers are CPU 315F-2 PN/DP and CPU 317F-2 PN/DP.
