Based at ABB’s factory in St Neots, all 20 ABB Functional Safety Engineers completed a rigorous programme of training under the TÜV Functional Safety Program, leading to the award of the title of TÜV Functional Safety Engineer to those who pass an exam in a specified safety related subject. All candidates for TÜV training must have a minimum of three to five years experience in the field of functional safety and either a University degree (Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering) or equivalent engineer level responsibilities certified by their employer. Stuart Nunns, principal safety consultant and TÜV functional safety expert, says: "Functional safety is all-embracing. It not only covers the safety systems themselves, but also aspects of their lifecycle and supply chains that together ensure that they perform the required safety function as designed." The Safety Execution Centre at ABB’s St. Neots factory was the first organisation in the UK to be certified by TÜV Rheinland and the first of ABB’s 14 Safety Execution Centres worldwide to implement the functional safety management system and achieve certification. The department specialises in building safety systems based on ABB’s safety related products - System 800xA HI controller, PlantGuard and SafeGuard, which are also certified by TÜV organisations.
