IEC61508 and IEC61511 explained

30 June 2009

The 61508 Association is tackling confusion over IEC61508 and IEC61511 with a downloadable toolbox. The Association says it is trying to get all engineers ‘singing from the same hymn sheet’.

IEC61508 and the process sector guidance standard IEC61511 are both difficult standards to clearly describe according to the Association. The free, downloadable toolbox talks take five minutes to read and there are separate "hymn sheets" for everyone in the project.

Each toolbox talk is in pdf and comprises ‘Important and Surprising facts’ that presents the basics of the IEC61508 group of standards.

The company says users are welcome can download the documents and forward copies amongst their own company, their contractors and sub-contractors.

The sheets are also supported by a downloadable document to answer the question "What is Functional Safety Management?" under the standard. In addition other topics, such as IEC61511 certification are covered.
