Over the past 30 years, ABB says it has offered generations of different technical solutions for safety systems ranging from Dual Modular Redundant (DMR) systems in Norway to Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) Triguard and Plantguard systems in the UK. ABB now offers the fully integrated 800xA High Integrity System (HI System). The HI system, certified compliant with SIL3, and showcased to the public at Hannover Messe for the first time, is an integral part of the ABB Automation System 800xA. The uses of these modular and scalable HI systems yield integrated solutions, offering distinct savings throughout all phases of the system life-cycle. The 800xA is available in either dual-or quad-configuration. Both versions are compliant with SIL3 requirements. This allows end users to implement customised technical requirements cost-efficiently. For continuous processes, the 800xA HI system in quad-configuration offers a production availability of 99.9999 per cent. That’s about 30 seconds downtime per year.ABB says that customers in many countries have already installed the SIL2 system. Customers in Norway (oil rig Troll), Mexico (Pemex), Taiwan (Rexchip), Argentina (Compania Mega) and Kuwait (Oil Company) and others benefit from the advantages of an integrated solution. In the past 30 years, ABB claims it has successfully installed safety-oriented systems in more than 55 countries. While the vast majority of installations are within the oil and gas and chemical industries—the main drivers behind safety development—an increasing market diversification is clearly evident. More and more installations are being delivered to non-traditional markets such as power generation, pulp and paper, metals and mining, and the semiconductor industry, for example.
