The London based Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) will loose chief executive Robin McGill when he leaves to become managing director of AWE (Atomic Weapons Establishment) later in the year. IET president, Chris Earnshaw announced McGill’s forthcoming departure on February 27.

‘The IET has been fortunate to have had a chief executive of Robin McGill’s standing for the past two and a half years. This is evidenced by the level of position which Robin will take up,’ Earnshaw said shortly after he announced McGill’s departure.

Earnshaw expressed his regret at McGill leaving but congratulated him on securing such a prestigious role.

‘This inspires confidence throughout the IET that the changes put in place during his stewardship of the IET were orchestrated by someone of considerable capability and able to operate at the highest level. Robin has been instrumental in bringing the Institution back up to speed following the distractions of merging institutions, re-structuring internally and with the Trustees introducing major governance improvements,’ he added.

‘His commercial acumen and global experience have been invaluable in reassessing the strategic options for a professional institution, its members and staff.

‘It has been particularly challenging in relation to the widely acknowledged skills shortage in the engineering and technology sectors – a theme which will be concurrent with his new role and there may well be possibilities for future co-operation.’

Earnshaw’s sentiments were supported by McGill’s assertion that he would depart the IET with ‘a wealth of experience’.

‘As I approach the host of challenges that await me in my new position, I shall be ensuring that the professional doctrine of the IET, in particular the emphasis on qualifications and professional registration, is recognised as an important means of sustaining the high engineering standards for which AWE is renowned,’ he said.

‘At the end of the day, it’s about having well qualified, well motivated and competent people in positions of extreme responsibility that we all trust to make the right decision at the right time for the right reason.’
