Conference announced as women’s role in SET is considered

The UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (UKRC) has announced a conference to discuss the role of women in the SET workforce, hoping to bring together business leaders, academics and researchers to promote equality. There are three weeks left to register for the London based one-day conference, held on March 12, 2009.

Under the title ‘Tomorrow’s Women – Tomorrow’s World’, delegates will explore the strategies that are needed today to bring about a future where opportunity, education and equality ensure a SET workforce that is skilled, innovative, inclusive and rich in opportunity.

They will have the chance to share insights, questions and ideas; reassess current policy and practice; and take part in workshops, discussions and voting.

‘Looking to the future is an important exercise - more so in times of accelerated change and economic uncertainty,’ Annette Williams, director of the UKRC, said.

‘The world of SET is changing – new technologies and discoveries, huge shifts in the world economy and environmental challenges all have an impact. However, there has been relatively slow progress in the engagement of women in the workforce.

‘Women form less than 25 per cent of employees in most areas of the sector, and are concentrated in the lower income levels.

‘Can such a waste of talent and potential be allowed to continue, and can the UK afford for it to carry on? Our 2009 conference invites you to build a vision of the future which celebrates diversity, equality and inclusion in the SET workforce and workplace.’

Chaired by ex-‘Tomorrow’s World’ presenter, Maggie Philbin, the conference will be held at Hotel Andaz, London on March 12 2009. Delegates will be given the chance to listen to leading figures including Nicola Brewer, chief executive of Equalities and Human Rights Commissions and futurologist Dr. Wendy Schultz, on what they think the future may hold for the sector.

The event will also mark the International Year of Astronomy with the launch of Dr Maggie Aderin’s UK women’s programme, ‘She’s an Astronomer 2009’.
