ABB thermowells head for Nigeria

24 September 2008

Shell Oil is measuring process temperatures on its Bonny Island refinery in Nigeria with products from the UK.

The ABB thermowells were manufactured in the company’s Workington plant and have been supplied with associated thermometer and head mounted transmitters.

Manufactured from 316 stainless steel, the thermowells offer protection from corrosion with aluminium head mounted transmitters.

ABB had to incorporate Shell’s own variation of the Van Stone thermowell design into the construction.

‘Our ability to customise our products to precisely match a customer’s specifications is one of the key areas that sets us apart from our competitors,’ said Andrew Dunbabin, temperature products manager at ABB’s Workington, UK factory. ‘One of the variations required by Shell was no lag length between the connection and the bore. Our skill in providing unusual or non-standard temperature measurement configurations for the oil and gas industry meant we were able to easily accommodate this requirement.’
