Standardised instrument choices offers benefits for MILEI

20 July 2020

For more than 40 years, MILEI has focused on the enrichment and fractionation of ingredients from whey and milk and it is believed to be the world's first company to succeed in breaking these raw materials down into even finer constituents and supply lactoferrin.

For its new Milei 2.0 plant, the challenge involved replacing the entire system technology, improving quality standards and manufacturing new products in the area of whey and milk while increasing capacity and efficiency at the same time. Milei was aware that the biggest challenge would be the harmonisation of the measurement technology and hygiene standards across all of the system partners.

The company made the decision to make Endress+Hauser responsible for the instrumentation used for both standard and more-demanding hygiene applications in new plant. “Standardising the equipment of our new systems involves a tremendous amount of effort. For this reason, we decided to place the responsibility for the measurement technology into the hands of Endress+Hauser which allowed us to significantly reduce the internal storage and training effort,” said Gert Henke, head of engineering at Milei GmbH, Leutkirch.

In the MILEI 2.0 project, more than 2,500 measurement points now monitor the various values around-the-clock. As part of a stringent instrument standardisation strategy, it was possible to reduce the variety of devices employed to less than 50.
