IDS NXT rio & rome pilot series of app-based industrial cameras available

18 March 2019

A pilot series of the app-based IDS NXT rio and rome cameras will be available from May 2019. With a powerful on-board image processing engine, robust housings and standardized connections these cameras offer extraordinary versatility.

They can be used as high performance standard industrial cameras, or users can take advantage of extended, individually designed applications based on vision apps and on-camera neural networks.

The vision-app approach allows the camera to be configured to perrform the exact image processing tasks required for a particular application. The on-board hardware-accelerated processing lessens the network load on the host PC, lowers energy consumption and reduces system costs. Importantly these new models will also provide an easily integrated embedded solution for AI tasks such as object recognition or classification.

An AI vision app developed by IDS reconfigures the embedded hardware so that, for example, the FPGA serves as an AI accelerator. At the same time, it ensures that users can load pre-trained ANNs (artificial neural networks) of different architectures onto the cameras and execute them. In this way, AI vision tasks can be performed directly on the camera with inference times of only a few milliseconds, making them comparable to modern desktop CPUs in terms of accuracy and speed.
