New 3-CMOS sensor camera gives exceptional colour image data

19 December 2017

A new 3-CMOS area scan camera combines the accuracy of prism-based optics with the image quality provided by Sony Pregius IMX265 colour sensors. The prism separates incoming light into red, green and blue wavelengths, which are directed onto the three precisely-aligned sensors.

This allows the JAI APEX AP-3200T-USB to deliver better colour fidelity and spatial precision than traditional Bayer colour cameras.

With a resolution of 2064 x 1544 pixels for each sensor and a USB3 Vision interface providing data throughput of up to 350 MB/s, the AP-3200T-USB camera can output as much as 3 x 3.2 megapixels at 38.3 frames/second. This makes it the world’s highest performance 3-CMOS prism-based area scan camera. Single and multi-regions-of-Interest (ROI) can be used for even faster frame rates and faster image processing. Image processing is only performed on the ROI to increase processing speed further and to avoid influence from image details outside the ROI.

The APEX camera is loaded with a range of advanced features that support the most challenging colour imaging applications. These include:

• Analog gain and exposure setting for each individual R-G-B channel tom maximize dynamic range for each colour channel for improved image quality
• Automatic Level Control to efficiently handle changes in brightness
• Shading correction on ROI for improved processing speed
• Colour Temperature Preset to allow the camera to be adjusted to different light sources with a single click
• Colour Enhancer for strengthening of certain colours (double emphasis) in the image for additive hues (red, green and blue) and subtractive hues (cyan, magenta and yellow). This has benefits in microscopy and medical imaging
• Edge Enhancer to improve edge contrast in the colour image
• Pixel Binning to increase light sensitivity of the pixels or achieve better S/N at reduced resolution. A choice of horizontal and vertical binning combinations is provided
• Chunk data to provide user data and control data for each image for a host of parameters such as exposure time and LUT enable

This new camera provides great flexibility in on-board colour space conversion, including RGB to HSI and RGB to CIE XYZ. Adobe RGB and sRGB colour spaces are also available, ensuring that the most appropriate colour space can be chosen to ensure excellent colour discrimination is achieved. Typical applications include:

• Print inspection including packaging and labels
• Microscopy
• Inspection of medical devices
• Automotive inspection including paint matching, LEDs, and instrumentation
• Colour verification of pharmaceutical items
• Eye diagnostics
• Digital pathology
• Surgical imaging
• Certain types of meat or other food inspection
• Wafer inspection
• Inspection of coloured parts on printed circuit boards
• Colour calibration on LED screens
• Mining and mineralogy, sorting ores and gemstones based on subtle colour differences.

The camera has an extremely robust design. It has a 50G shock rating and 3G vibration rating which combined with an operating temperature range of -5°C to +45°C (ambient), enables the AP-3200T-USB to operate reliably in a wide range of industrial environments.
