A government initiative in 1990 led to the funding of regional services to screen for Diabetic retinopathy so patients did not have to travel to hospitals. To make mobile services possible the medical physics department decided to build its own mobile diabetic retinopathy screening units, using a combination of Rexroth’s MGE aluminium profile range and a CKK linear ballscrew actuator.For transportation reasons the units had to be robust and Craig Gill and David O’Donnell, medical technical officers at Belfast City Hospital, decided to use Rexroth’s MGE modular profile assembly system. Gill said: “Having used Rexroth equipment in a previous project, when we came to the design and build of this unit we both knew straight away what material we wanted to use.”In addition to the MGE system, Rexroth’s CKK linear balllscrew actuator was used as part of a cantilever system to support the photo imaging technology while not attaching to the far profile. The ballscrew provides smooth motion that the unit requires in order to make the small adjustments necessary for the operator when taking a picture of the patient’s eye.
