Hygienic and flexible linear-motion transport solution

08 June 2017

Beckhoff has introduced a hygienic version of its eXtended Transport System (XTS), a transport solution which sees the company’s linear motion technology driving movers around a track, independently of each other at high speeds and with high accuracy.

The XTS replaces mechanics with software functionality and this allows for a higher degree of design freedom. The reduction in mechanical engineering requirements allows machines using XTS to be more compact, lighter weight and will require less wiring. In addition, compared to conventional solutions, systems employing XTS will be more flexible and maintenance needs are lower.

The new XTS Hygienic was developed in co-operation with the European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG). As a result, it meets all the requirements for system certification according to EL Class I AUX. It has a protection rating of IP 69K, which promises a high degrees of protection against ingress of dust and water. In addition, it can cope with surfactants, acidic and alkaline cleaning agents, different alcohols and disinfectants and even hydrogen peroxide.

The mechanical components of the XTS Hygienic are made of V4A stainless steel, while the seals and covers consist of resistant plastic materials. In addition, all the joints between the individual components are protected against the ingress of dirt and liquid by a high-quality, elastic joint seal. Once installed, the XTS components form an even, smooth surface together with the machine that is easily accessible in all areas, which also makes it easy to clean. The rollers of the movers are sealed against the axis in such a way that it is possible to reliably prevent the ingress of dirt and any leakage of the bearing grease.
