Denca Controls the river flow from Llyn Tegid at Bala sluice gate system

01 December 2007

Widnes-based control system technology specialist, Denca Controls, has completed a SCADA and PLC control technologies upgrade on behalf of the Environment Agency Wales.

Involving the sluice gate control system, on the outlet of Llyn Tegid - Bala Lake, Snowdonia, a solution that Denca originally designed and implemented in 2000 - the upgrade was required to provide the highest levels of system security from both a hardware and software perspective and involved a comprehensive legacy upgrade of the SCADA and PLC technologies currently in place.

As part of the Denca solution, two brand new PCs, running upgraded software provide control of the sluice gate system, with one of the OC systems remaining on cold standby. Prior to commissioning, Denca Controls carried out full IO testing to ensure all upgraded software was 100% curruption free.

The control system used by the Environment Agency Wales is GE Fanuc Cimplicity; a solution with advanced client/server architecture, well suited to discrete applications and able to handle very large amounts of digital signals and alarm bursts.
