The Worthing based water company enlisted the services of Andritz following a recent European Directive regarding the potential hazard of the presence of methane and dust which could potentially lead to an explosive environment.Andritz approached Jumo Instruments, with whom they have an on-going agreement to replace all non-ATEX probes with new ATEX versions, to assist with the update.Jumo supply instrumentation, namely temperature probes, to monitor process temperatures around Andritz industrial dryers. The probes then feed these signals back to a SCADA system via 4-20ma transmitters fitted inside the terminal heads of the temperature probes.Due to the large range of temperatures being monitored, Andritz use both type ‘K’ thermocouple and pt100 probes. The dryer used in the Southern Water application converts waste matter into pellets used for fertiliser. The probes monitor temperatures ranging from 100 - 800°C and are used at various points around the dryer, including the drum inlet and drum outlet points. In keeping with the new directive they meet EEx ia 11C T1 standards and are claimed to provide a safe, reliable means of temperature measurement.Len Spencer, of Andritz, said he was pleased with the performance of the probes and added: “We will be looking to use the Jumo ATEX probes on future projects to replace all non-conforming temperature sensors as the new probes have proven reliability and ease of fitting.”
