Previously the meters were limited to just 33 bar but the new model can handle pressures up to 100 bar and Sierra is set to release a 300 bar unit later in 2012.
Uniquely, the meter features a newly designed valve that reduces leakage to an absolute minimum when in the closed position.
Other high pressure meters use metal valve seats that are difficult and expensive to manufacture and calibrate and do not seal completely. In addition, repeated cycling of the valve can damage the metal seat leading to degraded performance over time. Sierra's patented DCET (Dynamic Compliance Electromagnetic) valve seat technology will not dimple or dent because it is made from an inert high impact polyamide. The high pressure 'twists' the valve seat into a better seal, allowing tighter control and reducing leak-by to less than four standard cubic centimetres per minute (sccm)..
Smart-Trak 100 features Dial-A-Gas® technology with an internal microprocessor pre-programmed with ten gases that are commonly used in biotech, pharmaceutical, analytical and research applications - other gases can be substituted to customise the flowmeter. This technology allows the instrument to be used for multiple applications at a lower cost, creating greater flexibility as well as helping to reduce its spares inventory.
The Smart Trak 100 has an accuracy of +/- 1.0 per cent of full scale. The standard version can measure flow ranges from 0-10 sccm to 0-1,000 standard litre per minute (slpm). The new high pressure model measures a flow range of 100 sccm to 20 slpm.
Constructed in 316 stainless steel, the instrument features primary standard calibration and NIST traceability. It also has a pilot module, available mounted to the face of the instrument or in a convenient hand-held version, which replaces expensive control and readout electronics. It enables a range of control functions including gas type, setpoint value and source, engineering units, output signal and valve state - open, closed or automatic.
These control functions are also available from a PC via RS-232. Source code for RS-232 communication is provided but it has multi-drop RS-485/MODBUS RTU capability using Sierra's CompodT.
The Compod enables simple gas processes like gas mixing and blending, batch control, leak testing and process monitoring at a fraction of the cost of complex programmed logic controllers (PLCs). A Compod, coupled with Sierra's Smart-Trak® mass flow meters and controllers, simplifies basic flow control installations and permits networking of multiple instruments using open source MODBUS RTU protocol. Two digital outputs and one analogue input can be configured by the end user for a wide variety of process controls. Unlike dedicated PLCs, a Compod is a small device that mounts locally to the face of the Smart-Trak MFC.
Litre Meter, a leading manufacturer and supplier of custom flowmeters, is the UK distributor for the Sierra Instruments range of flowmeters. As with Litre Meter's own range of custom flowmeters, Sierra Instruments' range is designed to operate in some of the harshest conditions on the planet.
