Omron's new series of temperature controllers

With built-in logic and data bank functions, Omron says its new E5_N-H temperature controllers allow, in many applications, complete control systems to be implemented without the need for additional devices such as timers, mini-PLCs or intelligent relays.

The new series is an extension of Omron’s E5_N product line, which the company claims is “world’s best-selling temperature controllers.”

The new controllers are available in three sizes:
• 1/16 DIN E5CN-H; 2-line display
• 1/8 DIN E5EN-H; 3-lline display
• 1/4 DIN E5AN-H, 3-line display

Most features are common to all models, but the two larger sizes have room for a three-line display and provide additional I/O terminals.

Omron’s Windows-based CX-Thermo software, is used for set up and programming of the advanced features. The software provides full access to all of the controller’s functions, and allows libraries of functions to be built, which can be transferred between controllers as an aid to rapid configuration.

One special feature of the new controllers is that they all incorporate eight “work bits”. These can be programmed to perform simple logic operations, with or without time delays, using, for example, the status of alarms, the SP ramp, or the controller’s digital inputs. The work bits can be used to control the operation of the unit itself, and of its outputs.

As well as the work bits, the temperature controllers have eight internal data banks that can be used to store operational parameters such as PID and alarm settings, set values, and soak times. These banks can be used to hold “recipes” relating to different products, which can then be selected by the user. Alternatively, the data banks can be linked to provide the functionality of an SV programmer.

Additional enhancements include a fast input sampling time of 60mS, an input accuracy of 0.1% PV and an output resolution greater than one in 10,000.

Omron says the new controllers are “exceptionally versatile,” with just one version needed to cover Pt, thermocouple, current and voltage inputs. The output modules are also interchangeable, allowing users to select electromechanical relay, solid-state relay, pulse, voltage or current types according to their requirements.

For maximum user convenience, all models in the series incorporate a five-digit eleven-segment colour-change display. The E5CN-H has a two-line display, while the E5EN-H and E5AN-H have three-line displays. Products in the E5_N-H series offer up to four digital event inputs and a wide range of digital communication options, including Modbus. They E5EN-H and E5AN-H also support programming via a front-mounted infrared port, as well as remote set point and transfer facilities.
