‘Robust’ panels put wind in WES’s sails

27 May 2008

Sharp increases in energy prices are prompting an interest in alternative forms of energy. Wind Energy Solutions (WES), manufacturer of small to medium-sized wind power turbines, is enjoying the favourable market conditions and has recently equipped its new control cabinet with operator panels from Beijer Electronics.

A Beckhoff PLC controls each WES turbine and a terminal is located on the control panel for user interface.

WES has been using panels from Schiele until the German headquartered PLC supplier suggested Beijer.

Eng. Poul van Slooten, technical manager at WES, said technical research proved the Beijer panel to be ‘exactly what we needed’.

‘The Beijer Electronics display has a very good interface with the Beckhoff PLC,’ he added. ‘We started using the Cimrex 12 panels and we are now upgrading from Cimrex to EXTER K20m on our 80 kW and 250 kW turbines.’

Van Slooten said the panels were ‘robust, high-quality products’ which he said was essential because turbines were often in ‘remote and isolated areas’.
