Weidmüller makes Industry 4.0 real at Drives & Controls

Connectivity expert Weidmüller has chosen this year’s Drives & Controls Exhibition at the NEC from 10 – 12 April (Stand D348, Hall 10) as the launchpad for solutions in the company’s groundbreaking u-mation range, which takes Industry 4.0 from a much-anticipated future concept to a productive reality for today.

Among Weidmüller’s key launches at the show are u-control, a platform-independent programming solution that works with standard web browsers; u-view, a range of multi-touch operator interface panels that provide optimised communication between users and machines; u-remote, a remote I/O system that offers the seamless communication with field devices needed for implementing Industry 4.0 concepts; and PROtop power supplies that provide the clean, dependable power essential for the correct functioning of modern automation systems.

Visitors to the stand will also be able to try out the new Weidmüller configurator, an intuitive software package that makes it easy to design, specify and order terminal rails and components, and to examine samples of many Weidmüller products that are already established in the automation sector including, for example, Rockstar® heavy-duty connectors and Klippon® Connect terminal blocks.

Throughout the show, experts from Weidmüller will be on hand to discuss with visitors their own individual requirements and applications. They will be happy to explain how the Weidmüller’s latest u-mation solutions make it possible for users to start reaping the benefits of Industry 4.0 right now – including increased efficiency, productivity and profitability. The experts will also be able to provide insights into other key developments supported by Weidmüller – such as Digital Twin, industrial analytics and integration of product data with the EPLAN computer-aided engineering (CAE) platform.

The u-control programming solution is a web-based tool that provides facilities for flexible system design, IEC 61131-1 compliant programming of control devices and configuration of human-machine interface (HMI) systems. It also supports monitoring and configuration of a wide range of devices in the u-control range, either locally or via an Internet connection. Unlike conventional engineering tools, u-control doesn’t require complex and time-consuming installation, and it is not tied to a specific operating system. The only requirement is an HTML-5 compliant browser.

Multi-touch operator interface (HMI) solutions in the new u-view range provide clear and detailed visualisation of machine operations and processes as well as intuitive facilities for machine and process control – functionality that is fundamental to implementing Industry 4.0. The range includes two families of panels – BasicLine, with screen sizes from 4.3” to 10” and AdvancedLine with screen sizes from 7” to 15.6”. All models feature an elegant slim design, high screen resolution and brightness, and a fast CPU to ensure smooth graphics presentation.

Ideal for decentralised collection and forwarding of data from field-mounted devices, Weidmüller’s new u-remote I/O range includes modules with an IP67 ingress protection rating. Also available are multiprotocol modules that support EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP and PROFINET, thereby eliminating the need to stock and use different modules for each protocol. All of the modules feature compact construction, which makes them easy to accommodate, even in applications where little space is available.

To help meet the reliability and performance demands of Industry 4.0 automation systems, Weidmüller has developed its new PROtop power supply solutions. These incorporate DCL (dynamic current limiting) technology, which allows them to provide the high short-term peak power needed for motor starting and to ensure the fast, reliable operation of protective device in the event of a fault. PROtop technology makes it easy to implement n+1 redundant systems for applications where the highest possible reliability is essential, and it also means that the power supplies can be directly connected in parallel to support large loads.
