Global motor protection in explosive areas

22 December 2015

Siemens now offers its Sirius 3RV motor starter protectors and 3RU thermal overload relays with IECEx certification which allows the use of equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres globally.

With the new IECEx certification in compliance with IEC 60079, the Sirius 3RV and 3RU motor starter protectors are believed to be the first certified switching devices to come onto the market.

Until now, 3RV motor protection circuit breakers and 3RU thermal overload relays have been certified in accordance with the ATEX Directive applicable in Europe, which allowed their use as motor protection devices in potentially explosive atmospheres. IECEx certification for national Ex approvals is gaining momentum globally. It facilitates the global use of certified equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres and reduces the complexity for control panel planners and builders.

Sirius 3RV motor starter protectors are compact, current-limiting circuit-breakers for motor or starter protection that are suitable for applications up to 100 A. They guarantee safe reliable shutdown when short circuits occur and protect loads and plants against overload. Furthermore, they are suitable for normal switching duty with loads that have a low operating frequency and for safely disconnecting the plant or system from the line supply.
