Reducing nitrogen costs using Fisher Regulators

While improving overall tank storage performance, safety and reliability, one of Emerson Process Management’s largest pharmaceutical customers achieved a €384K nitrogen consumption net saving per year and have reduced total emissions by up to 99% in standard operation following deployment of Fisher regulators on 15 storage tanks.
Tank blanketing is applied to stored liquid that enters in or results from the production process. As such, it should be protected from external oxygen and moisture contamination to either keep its integrity or prevent it from exploding. For these reasons, nitrogen, an inert gas, is used to fill in the tank volume left by the liquid.
To maintain a constant nitrogen pressure in the tank, a `Pad’ regulator is used to let nitrogen in when the level of liquid drops, while a `Depad’ regulator is used to let nitrogen out when the level of liquid increases.
On most cases, the nitrogen is simply released into the atmosphere and is a source of environmental contamination. Depending on the set up, this loss could also represent an important cost.
The best way to reduce the amount of nitrogen released into the atmosphere is to decrease the set point of the Pad and Depad regulators. The lower the pressure, the lower the flow rate of nitrogen released whilst in standard operation. However, such a set up also comes with potential issues:
• It becomes more difficult to maintain correct regulation accuracy, with the risk of erratic behavior
• Both regulators might not be able to cope with sudden changes to liquid level
